I hope the transition into the new year treats you well. We are soon to be in the year of the Horse (Chinese moon calendar) which is a year of fresh starts, high energy and transformation.

I have been flying very under the radar since I published Heir of Ether in November and am so sorry about it! I am pregnant with my first child and the creative energy that this little human has been pulling from me feels astronomical! I managed to edit and publish the book all while keeping the pregnancy relatively secret which was a huge task in its own but the news is out there now and I am embracing the slowing down and tuning inward.

Book two of the Her Divine Children duo-logy is well underway and I have the goal to publish it on November 1st of next year to mark one year between the two books (Sorry for the wait for all those who have read it! ). The ultimate goal is to have the first draft done before the baby arrives in May, which at the moment feels like a daunting task but I feel my creative energy slowly creeping back into my bones and new inspiration has hit.

As some of you may have heard, if you follow my socials, I have decided to make book two a dual p.o.v book following Nuria’s p.o.v. and Embrys’ p.o.v. With this change I have been writing so much! Jumping into Embrys’ mind has been such a cool exercise into the psychology of relationships for me. It has truly been a trip back into how my own mind worked around relating to others in my early twenties (a very tumultuous and broody time!) .

I am nearly at the half way point of book two and I can’t wait to share it with you all! There may even be some sneak peek chapters coming your way in the future and the title of book two!

My proof copy came and it is so surreal holding an actual book… with words… that I wrote! I read the first chapter and actually had to put it down because I was freaking out about how other people will perceive it. I think I will give it some space until after it is released until I read my book again to safeguard the joy I feel when I read it rather than letting self doubt seep in. Once it is out there it is out there and all I can do is sit back and enjoy it!

Book Updates

Oh, how time flies! The ARCs (advanced reader copies) of Heir of Ether have gone out! And we are less than a month away from release day! I find it surreal, scary and amazing that 60 people have my book in their hands right now. Thank you for everyone that signed up! ARC readers are truly invaluable, not only because reviews obviously help other people find the book but also as a sort of ‘dry run’ for the actual release. Your views and opinions really mean the world to me and I am anxiously awaiting your thoughts. Please feel free to message me anytime!

For those that are not on my ARC team and are waiting for the release I also thank you! A note for all the avid readers out there: leave reviews after you’ve read a book! Especially for indie authors. This is one of the best ways you can support an small time author if you enjoyed their work.

In other news… my full book cover is finished!! You guys get to see it first here. I am uploading my cover and manuscript to KDP today and will be ordering my first proof copy. Having the actual book in my hand will be such a huge milestone for me and I cannot wait!

Release day is slowly creeping up and I have been worrying about my lack of social media push but other things in my realm are pulling my focus away from marketing at the moment. I decided to be proud of myself for 1. completing a manuscript and 2. actually publishing it. Apparently only 3% of authors actually finish writing their books and 1% go on to publish…. What?! This statistic sounds wild to me. There are thousands of books being published every year… Which means there are thousands more that are being writing but will never be finished or shared with the world. So a little message to anyone who is writing and is feeling stuck or like an impostor: please write the book! Don’t get hung up on what other people think. This is a seed of creation within your heart that is bursting to get out and you deserve to finish it! Even just for yourself. Human made art is more important than ever in this crazy sea of AI generated crap. Your voice matters, your wacky story matters.

Currently Reading and TBR List

I have finished all of the ARCs I signed up for an am actually between books right now. This is the first time in a VERY long time that I am not actively reading something. I finished the second book in the Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries series and my library has bloody lost the third and final book. So I have rage quit reading until they order another one haha. That being said, I am going to the library next week to brows the shelves for something else to read. Their online system has been down for two weeks and I am realizing how reliant I am on the library! I felt lost without it!

In my rage and dismay I have reverted to re-watching Gilmore Girls because I needed something cozy to settle into until that next perfect book lands in my lap. Wish me luck!

Book Updates

My goodness, this newsletter that was meant to be sent out bi-monhly has turned into a once a month thing. My deepest apologies for the ol’ switcheroo! I have just not felt I have had much to say as I have slowed down in my writing as other things in life have been happening. My partner turned 30 (we had a massive party. There were 32 people in my home for 3 days), I’ve been taking on more massage clients, spring has arrived and lots of work on the farm needed to be done to prepare and my partner’s parents are returning from traveling for months! Lots and lots going on, but I do still write! Book 2 in the Her Diving Children duology is moving forward!

I have been deeply focused on my LAST round of edits before I send my manuscript off to my author friend Susan for formatting. Once that is done I will be sending out my ePub copy to all of my lovely ARC readers!!

An ARC reader is someone who gets an advanced reader copy and has the task of leaving reviews on social media, and Goodreads before the book releases and on Amazon once it has released. This is such a valuable tool for authors as it gives you credibility to have actual people leaving reviews (whether good or bad) AND it also helps authors build a little community. They also help catch any last mistakes (spelling, spacing ect.) to help do a final polish of the book.

To say I am nervous about this is an understatement. I have 50 people signed up so far and most of these humans I have never met. This feels like the real deal! My book is going out there and some people might love it, some might hate it. I just have to sit back and trust in the process.

I truly love my book. I wrote what I would like to read and I believe it is pretty darn good but I still know that it won’t be everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ and I am steeling myself for that. After all, no artist can please everyone, nor should they.

Currently Reading and TBR List

I started reading book two in the Emily Wilde series but had to put that down to dive into a few ARC reads that I signed up for. I read and absolutely loved Bone Men: First Oaths by C.J. Tuma and Quin Cameron. It releases in October and I highly recommend giving it a read if you like cozy gay romance with cults and high-ish stakes. There is very minimal spice and the plot line is quite intriguing.

I am currently reading Oathborn by A.C Orlandi which is the first book in an epic fantasy that releases in October as well, I believe. So far I am loving the world building, magic system and all the dynamic characters. It has multi POV so you do jump around a lot but I actually enjoy all of the different POVs. Usually in a multi POV I always have one character I deem “the boring one” and I try to rush through their chapters but it isn’t the case with Oathborn. Everyone is interesting!

Eco-Quirk Magazine presents: A Spotlight on Plantain

(Since Heir of Ether is not out yet you’re probably thinking, “What the heck is Eco-Quirk Magazine?” This is a magazine that is mentioned, albeit briefly, in the book. My main character Nuria Piedmont has a subscription to this magazine because she is a fellow plant nerd, but she especially loves mushrooms. I thought it would be fun to build upon the magazine here! Consider this a special little treat that I will continue exclusively for you, my newsletter pals.)

Plantain, also known as Plantago lanceolata is an amazing medicinal herb that grows all over the world

Topically, this plant is known as the ‘Green Band-aid’. It is very astringent and helps knit together torn skin. you can make it into a paste and smear it on wounds or literally wrap a wound with the leaf like a Band-aid. I personally hot steep plantain in coconut oil and make a salve out of it by adding beeswax. I use it in so many ways and my friends and family love the salve. Mixed with Calendula and Chickweed, this salve is great for burns, cuts/scrapes, rashes, nappy rash, bug bites and fungal infections.

Internally, plantain can be sipped in a tea to hep soothe coughs and sore throats. It is also an expectorant which means it will help bring up phlegm. Since this plant is soothing to the mucous membranes of the body that means it would also soothe the membranes in the gut.

This is also a super food to put in your salads. It has a mild mushroomy flavour and can be eaten raw. It contains vitamins: A, B1, B2, B5, B6, C and K as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, selenium and zinc!

Book Updates

To be honest, this newsletter will be a little bit shorter than my last because I have taken a major break from writing these past few weeks. Edits are still underway for Heir of Ether aaaaaaand I did upload my book onto Amazon for pre-sale! Woohoo!

It is just for the eBook and I have decided to use KDP Select for the first 3 months of release so the eBook will only be available via Kindle (which is a free app you can have on any device) but the paperback will be also be available to purchase, and I know you love holding a real book like me… right?

I also committed to the release date which will be November 1st, 2025!

The process of setting up a pre-sale on Amazon is actually extremely straight forward but I, of course, took five hours to figure it all out HA!

In all honesty, I did a deep dive into writing my book description and optimal genres and key words to label my book as to maximize visibility. The back end of self-publishing is a part of the wild west of capitalism, as is marketing for literally anything, but getting books seen is such a niche form of it that there are deep, dark rabbit holes one can fall into to get all the juicy details on how to get your work out there. I still feel confused about it all and even after all that time am receiving messages fro my writer groups giving me advice on fixing my set up.

Now that my pre-sale set up is out of the way I feel less behind in the “supposed to be doing” list and feel that I’ve taken a long enough break from book two to settle back in with fresh eyes and an open heart to the channel of creativity.

So I suppose that is pretty big news! I took a break from writing book two in the Her Divine Children duology (or series? We shall seeee) because I felt myself floundering a bit. It felt too big for me to see clearly so I took a step back for a few weeks. I am now diving in again with fresh ideas and a clear head.

I also read a piece of writing by Sophie Strand that reignited something within me. It spoke into how reading romantasy and fantasy novels has the stigma of being a “guilty pleasure” but in all honesty it is popular and has been for a long time for a special reason.

The container of a fantasy book and a love story is a space in which we can allow our confused and unmet/unexpressed emotions regarding the madness of the world around us be felt in a way that doesn’t hit too close to home. It is a way that we can feel our own shared humanity and have it linked, through story, to the horrors of our waking world.

I feel, personally, that a story with a romantic plot or sub-plot pulls me into the consciousness of those characters so fully that their experiences and emotions feel as though they are my own. It fills me with their rage for justice, it fills me with courage or a badass get shit done attitude BECAUSE If there is love then I can relate.

I can relate to a character that is living in extreme poverty or is oppressed if there is love. I can relate to a gnome, if there is love. I can relate to a villain, if there is love. I can relate to any sort of wicked creature if there is love and in doing so I can see their downfalls and mistakes or their courage and bravery and I can then reflect upon myself and what my actions and imprint as a human in this world has upon others.

Fantasy and Romantasy are the juicy space where all emotions can rip through you in the span of a page or two but won’t destroy you with the bleakness of reality because you feel safe and removed enough from said reality thanks to the magical creatures, powers, dragons, wizards and witches, etc.

Soooo if you were looking for a reason to read Heir of Ether, or any fantasy for that matter, I hope I just convinced you!

Currently Reading and TBR List

I am currently reading Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett. Yes, I know, this is not on my TBR from my last newsletter but I had some high anxiety this month and needed something cozy and this had no holds on it at the library. I am actually taking quite a while to read this one. I am really enjoying it but it isn’t so gripping that I can’t put it down but I love a good scientific inquest into all things fae. The lore is so rich in this book that I wish her encyclopedia was real.

Also The Sandman season two is on Netflix so that has also been taking up some of my down time. I am loving it!

Eco-Quirk Magazine presents: A Spotlight on Yarrow

(Since Heir of Ether is not out yet you’re probably thinking, “What the heck is Eco-Quirk Magazine?” This is a magazine that is mentioned, albeit briefly, in the book. Yarrow, also known as Achilles millefollium is a multifaceted medicinal herb.

Topically this plant was well known on the battlefield. It would be used to staunch bleeding, by bruising the plants or chewing it up and stuffing it into open wounds. This not only helped coagulated the blood but also help the skin cells to start stitching themselves back together again due to its very astringent properties.

Internally, Yarrow is an extremely bitter plant which means it is also very cooling. To bring down a fever that is lingering too long, (don’t interrupt a fever unless it lasts more than 48 hrs or is dangerously high) Yarrow can be used in a tea, mixed with peppermint and elder-flower. Yarrow is also a uterine tonic and emmenagogue which means it can stimulate menstrual flow and help ease cramping. It is a herb often found in sitz bath blends for postpartum mummas as well as teas.

Yarrow grows prolifically in North America from my experience growing up in Canada but is a bit more rare to find in the wild places of Australia. It is native to the more temperate areas of Europe, North American and Asia. It is a frilly little plant with white or pinkish-red flower clusters that bees love!

I’m popping on to update you all with our first regular programming post. Welcome to the wonderful world of newsletters from moi. This is what to expect bi-monthly from now on. This post will have more pictures than usual because… well there is something exciting to share! Let’s jump right in!

Book Updates

Heir of Ether is currently in it’s final edits before I send it off to be formatted! The time of release seems to be inching closer and closer and I have started embracing the title ‘author’. Impostor syndrome is a voice that is always active at the back of my mind but I find all I can do is to just do the flipping thing! So I am doing the thing, one step at a time, and enjoying the process.

I will be honest here, for something that started out as a curiosity and a hobby, it has turned into something that feels real and serious for me. I am horribly attached to my book baby and there have been quite a few days with meltdowns and tears. There have also been days filled which such immeasurable joy that I believe this is what truly creating is. The roller coaster is part of it. After all, there is no light without the dark, right?

Here are the steps I took after finishing my initial manuscript for those that are interested in the process. It is not THE ONLY way to self-publish but it is my first time and perhaps this will be an interesting insight for anyone else going down this road. Or just for anyone who is interested in how books get made too!

• Finish manuscript

• Leave it be for a week. Resist the urge to start editing and reading right away! This step is very important and ideally I should have waited longer. The longer you wait, the clearer your mind is and you are able to read it as if it is the first time.

• First round of edits, only focus on plot line edits. At this point I also shared it with a few trusted people. One of which really stuck, my dear friend Jarrah. She ended up sticking with me the whole way through and is doing line edits/copy edits for me now which I am undyingly grateful for!

• Leave it be for a month! Start on book two

• Second round of edits. This was line and copy edits. Line edits are for sentence structure and flow, copy edits are for catching grammar and spelling mistakes.

• Sent off to 4 beta readers. Beta readers read a polished but not finished manuscript. They look for things like plot holes, character continuity, and general vibes. So far feedback has been amazing and so so helpful. I have some plot twists that I was unsure worked but I have recently been told that they do! So yay!

• Third round of edits. I ended up printing off a copy so I could read it in its physical form. Let me tell you, this was a game changer! I caught sooooo many mistakes that I had not seen whilst reading on the computer. I also saw some areas where I needed to fill in the plot a bit and actually made some big changes here.

• Fourth round of edits was basically just adding all the edits and changes I made during third round plus catching little grammar things here and there

• Commission my book cover!!!!!

Book two is well underway as well! I’ve written the first 50 pages so far and am very happy with where it is going. I am what they call a “Pantser” which means I do not do huge amounts of planning and plotting before I write. I have a general idea of where I want the story to go and the conclusion but all the in between stuff just comes to me in the moment. This is what I love most about writing. The absolute wonder and shock I also receive writing the stories is so fulfilling to me!

I just finished Where The Dark Stands Still by A. B. Poranek which is a YA Fantasy that is rife with Polish folklore. For those who enjoy The Witcher, this is like the whimsical little sister. I both enjoyed this and didn’t. Poranek’s prose is wonderfully flowery and it would make me sit in awe and re-read a description of something as simple as wind or the entrance of a forest over and over. The plot itself was extremely slow up until I’d say the last 50 pages, so this relatively short book took me two weeks to finish. I recommend it for anyone that likes a cozy, slightly spooky YA fantasy with cute side characters and a sentient house.

Ah yes, good old Taraxacum officinale, the healer of soil and our livers.

This robust plant grows literally everywhere in the world. It can grow out of rock, concrete, garbage, sand…anything! It used to be used more widely than your common day lettuces and would be encouraged to grow more than grass was.

It is super duper nutritious. It contains vitamins: A,C,K and E as well at iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. This plant is also very high in antioxidants and is a great pre-biotic

The leaves can be eaten fresh or cooked and the roots can be roasted and used to brew a coffee alternative. While it isn’t stimulating in the same caffeinated sense as coffee, the roots do stimulate your liver and digestive system. So for those of you that can’t poop without your morning coffee… well dandy root tea will do the trick!

I apologize, you probably did not expect to read about poop in an author’s newsletter but as a herbalist this is a hot topic for me ;)

If you live in a city be mindful of where you harvest dandelion. Stay away from any high traffic areas or areas that might be contaminated from sewage or garbage. If you want to grow some as a salad green, next time you walk by a floof ball, rather than blowing on it and making a wish or kicking it, collect the seeds! Plant some in your yard or a pot on your balcony. I promise you won’t regret the addition to your salad bowl.

I thought I would take a moment to introduce myself and how I started down the writing path.

My name is Elena Huebert and I am a Canadian living in Australia (soon to be a full citizen). I am your friendly neighbourhood kitchen witch, chef, yogi and masseuse that loves all things plants, herbal medicine, permaculture and…you guessed it, fantasy books!

I have lived on an off-grid community with my partner, his family and some of our friends on the east coast of Australia for the past 6 years and this way of living has truly inspired my writing. The land here is so magical and our lifestyle is nice and slow so I get to observe Mother Nature in all her moods.

Now you may be wondering, how did she make the leap from garden gnome to writer? Well let me tell you.

I won’t lie when I say I absolutely hated reading as a kid. I wanted to play. In the mud. My two older sisters loved reading and would try their darndest to get me to join but I would not have a bar of it. All through school I struggled and thought I just was not cut out for reading or creative writing (there was a creative writing incident in grade 12, I was crushed by some critique).

Skip forward to the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 and bloody lock downs. There was lots to do on the farm but socialising was pretty much done for a good long while (I am an introvert so I did not complain). I found I was getting addicted to watching Netflix as way to disassociate with the madness of the world and made the decision that I needed to read instead, even though it felt quite daunting.

Enter the classic, quick paced, fairy smut we all secretly love and BOOM, I am devouring books in a few days that would have taken me weeks, even months, to finish a few years earlier. So yes, some wonderful smutty books started my obsession but now I love anything in the fantasy realm and I dabble a bit in romance, post-apocalyptic and general fiction. I read the Harry Potter series for THE FIRST TIME in 2021. Crazy, I know. I finished all the books in 2 weeks…

Fast forward to the beginning of 2025. My dear friend Kelsey, over at @cauldron.arts on instagram (lil shout out), posed a challenge for her friends and/or followers to utilise her new card game Perfect Diction (ok, bigger shout out). This is a somatic game of words and connection in which the users/players are given a deck of sensory, tantalizing words, wink wink, and are then urged to create something with them. There are many ways to play the game but this is what she asked of us to trial it for her. I don’t remember the 12 words I was given but out of those words a beautifully spicy scene and my main character for my debut novel emerged. This happened to converge with an intense spinal injury that happened to me a week after submitting my writing piece to Kels. That injury knocked me off my feet for a solid two months which gave me time and space to really sink into my new passion. The gardens went feral, things died and withered outside but inside a fire was ignited and I look back on the time and I don’t remember the pain at all, just the excitement and drive to keep writing.

I had no intentions of continuing to write a whole duology full of lore, magical creatures, and quirky characters based around this scene but here we are! (The scene was actually cut from the book but I still love it, and might share it??)

Book one of Heir of Ether took me 8 weeks to write the first draft. 95k words in 8 weeks? From a gal who thought being a writer was some unattainable feat? Madness!

I was shocked at what came out of me and now I am utterly obsessed with writing. I have had a lot of support in the form of friends beta reading and editing, my FB writing support group keeping me sane and my unbelievably supportive partner who is my biggest cheerleader, all of which I am so very grateful for.

Anyways, I am so happy you’re here on this wild ride with me! Life is truly amazing and the journey of writing and reading has healed so much within me. I always thought I was not a very creative person but it turns out I need to use my words, rather than a paintbrush to share the magic.

I find that the more I read, the more I feel connected to humanity. The ability to feel something from a work of art knits us so close together. We all feel, deeply, and I truly hope I can add some feeling into your life through the stories that come out of me. I believe that the stories are not mine. They belong to whomever feels a connection with them and can’t wait to share them with you!

I began writing my debut novel, Heir of Ether, in January 2025 as a result of a spinal injury that prevented me from leaving home for months. As a nature gal at heart, this was a new, frustrating challenge for me, being cooped up inside. Reading became a huge part of my life at the start of the pandemic, as I am sure a lot of you can relate, and has turned into somewhat of an obsession when I became immobile. It felt only natural to dive into writing myself when my injury gave me the time and space to run wild with my imagination. After all, a bit of suffering and a dash of boredom are incredible ignition points for creativity! And thus, Heir of Ether was born!

I’ve created this space as not only a spot for me to share news about my writing, but also as a community for avid readers, nature enthusiast and other writers to converge. I hope to spark joy and inspiration with the content and would be so honored to share this space with you!
